HealthCare Access Maryland Selected as Central Region Connector

Grant From MHBE Will Help Thousands of Uninsured Residents in Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Anne Arundel County Gain Access to Affordable Health Care

(Baltimore, MD—April 26, 2013) The Maryland Health Benefit Exchange has selected HealthCare  Access Maryland (HCAM) to serve as the “Connector” for the central Maryland region as part of the State’s consumer assistance program to implement the Affordable Care Act and help uninsured residents learn about, apply for, and enroll in health insurance. As one of only six regional Connector entities in the state, HCAM received approximately $7.9 million in grant funding to serve residents in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Anne Arundel County.

“HCAM is excited and proud to have been selected as the Connector Entity for the Central Region,” said Kathleen Westcoat, HCAM’s President and CEO. “Connecting people to health care has been HCAM’s primary focus for more than a decade. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with our partners to help the estimated 217,000 people in Baltimore City and Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties who are without health insurance gain access to affordable health care.”

As the Central Region Connector, HCAM has partnered with 17 organizations with deep connections in the communities they serve and expertise working with vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations. HCAM and the partner organizations will provide outreach and education, determine eligibility and facilitate enrollment of uninsured residents in the region into Medicaid, the Maryland Children’s Health Program (MCHP) and subsidized and non-subsidized qualified health plans.

“The collaboration with our partners will help ensure that all populations in the Central Region are reached, including those with limited English proficiency, disabilities or those who may be in underserved communities,” Westcoat said.
