Medical Assistance for Families Program
After 33 years of work, Bonnie Setters was distressed to lose her job and with it, her health insurance.
In the course of looking for another job, Mrs. Setters connected with HealthCare Access Maryland, Inc., which helped her find coverage for herself, her husband Jeffrey and their 15 year-old son Daniel, who suffers from asthma.
HCAM found that Daniel was eligible for the Medical Assistance for Families Program, which provides care at no cost to the family. HCAM also helped Mr. and Mrs. Setters get coverage through the program, which gave the family enormous relief.
“It was eeny, meeny, miny, moe there for a while. Should we pay for health care or our mortgage?” says Mrs. Setters. “As a mother, having to choose the mortgage over our child’s healthcare is demoralizing. Now we don’t have to make that choice.”
“We learned that families can get help and health coverage through Maryland’s health care coverage programs at HCAM,” she says. “Everyone there was so friendly and helpful. I feel like I’m getting back to okay.”
Mrs. Setters just recently contacted HCAM again after she needed help finding a neurologist for herself. She also reported that her husband had suffered a recent fall down a flight of stairs resulting in multiple injuries. After an emergency room visit and the needed after care she was glad to be able to focus on his needs and not on mounting medical bills.
