BALTIMORE – The Open Enrollment period for Marylanders to sign up for insurance through the federal Affordable Care Act has been extended to Dec. 22, 2017. HealthCare Access Maryland, a nonprofit organization, will continue to play a key role as the Connector Entity helping consumers enroll in qualified health insurance plans in Baltimore City, and Baltimore, Anne Arundel, Howard, Carroll and Frederick Counties.

Nearly 140,000 people across the state have already enrolled in insurance plans – a 3 percent increase from last year.

“With the busy holiday season, people need extra time to find an insurance plan that’s right for them,” said Traci Kodeck, president and CEO of HealthCare Access Maryland. “Our team of trained navigators will be working overtime to walk consumers through the process and help them make the best decision about insurance. We urge all consumers to take advantage of the extended deadline and get enrolled.”

Originally a six-week enrollment period, consumers now have an additional week to enroll in affordable insurance coverage. During the Open Enrollment period, consumers can sign up for various private insurance plans. Additionally, Marylanders who meet income and other eligibility factors can enroll in the state’s Medicaid insurance program.

Because of recent changes in plans, premiums and subsidies, HealthCare Access Maryland urges all consumers to shop for a 2018 plan, rather than accepting the automatic re-enrollment.

Consumers who sign up for insurance by Dec. 22, 2017, will have their policies go into effect January 1, 2018.

HealthCare Access Maryland has navigators who can assist consumers in locations throughout the region. Consumers can find all locations and extended hours at www.hcamaryland.org, or by calling 410-500-4710 or 855-288-3667. Spanish-language assistance is available.

Consumers can also go onto the state’s online exchange to learn about and sign up for insurance: Maryland Health Connection (https://www.marylandhealthconnection.gov/)

HealthCare Access Maryland was established in 1997 as Baltimore HealthCare Access to initially assist with the Medicaid transition to managed care. After growing steadily, the agency broadened its reach to provide services to people throughout the state and adopted its current name in 2011.
