This week we’re diving into one of the most important topics we cover as a Connector Entity — Medicaid. What is it, who qualifies, and what do PG County residents need to know about the changes coming in 2027? Let’s break it down.
What is Medicaid?
Medicaid is a government-funded health insurance program that provides free or low-cost health coverage to eligible individuals and families. In Maryland, Medicaid is administered through the Maryland Department of Health and covers a comprehensive range of services including:
- Doctor and specialist visits
- Hospital stays
- Prescription medications
- Mental health and substance use services
- Dental and vision care
- Prenatal and maternity care
For many PG County residents, Medicaid is the most affordable — and sometimes the only — path to comprehensive health coverage.
Who qualifies for Medicaid in Maryland?
Medicaid eligibility is generally based on income, household size, and a few other factors. In Maryland, you may qualify if you are:
- An adult with a low to moderate income
- A child or teenager
- Pregnant
- A person with a disability
- A senior citizen
One of the most common things we hear from residents is “I didn’t think I’d qualify.” And one of the most rewarding things we get to say back is “actually, you do.” Don’t count yourself out before talking to one of our specialists — you may be surprised.
How do I apply?
Applying for Medicaid in Maryland can be done through the Maryland Health Connection. HCAM’s certified Consumer Assistance Workers in PG County can help you complete your application, gather any required documentation, and follow up to make sure your enrollment is confirmed — all for free. You can enroll in Medicaid at any time of year, not just during open enrollment.
Important: Medicaid Changes Are Coming in 2027
Here’s something every current and prospective Medicaid member needs to know. Beginning January 2027, certain Medicaid members may need to meet new federal work and renewal requirements to maintain their health coverage. While 2027 may feel like a long way off, the time to get informed is now.
What does this mean practically? Some Medicaid members may need to show proof of employment, job training, volunteering, or other qualifying activities to continue receiving coverage. Renewal processes may also look different than they do today.
