Employee Spotlight: Brittany Duke, Social Work Medical Case Manager – MATCH

Brittany Duke started her career with HealthCare Access Maryland (HCAM) during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Brittany, a Social Work Medical Case Manager in HCAM’s Making All the Children Healthy (MATCH) program, is a clinical social worker who has experience working with children in foster care. In her position, Brittany reviews whether children in foster care have completed preventive health care appointments such as physical and dental exams. She also completes referrals for behavioral health services, requests insurance cards when needed, attends family involvement meetings with clients, caregivers, lawyers and other social workers, collects medical documentation, and makes recommendations related to services.

Brittany started her professional career as a paralegal and had planned to go to law school. However, she soon realized that she was more interested in the study of people than of law, prompting her to earn her Master’s in Social Work. While working towards her master’s degree, she interned at a treatment foster care agency where she completed mental health assessments, conducted play therapy, and facilitated group sessions. At her internship, she learned how to navigate systems and situations using communication, listening, and leadership skills. Today, she uses these skills daily at HCAM to navigate between the child welfare and health care systems.

Brittany’s personal connection to HCAM’s mission is evident in her work as a Social Work Medical Case Manager and can be clearly seen in her everyday interactions with her clients. “Personally, I have experienced difficulties navigating through the health care system from accessing insurance coverage to feeling unheard in doctor’s offices. It is great to know that I work for an organization that is focused on advocating in this area. I also believe education is important. I love that HCAM has made financial, health, and wellness education available to the community and employees through their virtual Speaker Series, meetings, wellness events, and more.”

Brittany has accomplished many things at HCAM over her two+ years of working in her role in HCAM’s MATCH program, including being more vocal in meetings and during projects. Brittany shared that her growth in this area was due to HCAM’s way of helping people with their professional and personal goals. We asked Brittany about some of the aspects of HCAM that make it a unique place to work, and she shared the following, “HCAM’s people-first and work-life balance priority separates it from many other employers in Maryland. HCAM offers flexible schedules, work from home options, Birthday PTO, and quarterly all-staff meetings. And most importantly, there is a genuine care for the person – not just the work – that makes this organization stand out.”
